I didn’t know a great deal about Slovakia before visiting. I knew that Bratislava was the capital. I knew that it was a fairly new country; established after the break up of Czechoslovakia. I would have been hard pressed to accurately pick it out on a map.
Unsurprisingly, Bratislava is Slovakia’s popular destination and it makes for an excellent city break. The weekend I spent in Bratislava was filled with warm Slovakian hospitality and it also provided a glimpse of the picturesque countryside which lies beyond. To the north there are mountains and the opportunity to ski. Dotted across the countryside are sleepy hamlets, villages and castles. I like to think that I will return someday and discover more of what the country has to offer.
